After orthodontic treatment, wearing a retainer is essential to prevent your teeth from shifting back to their original position. This is especially important during the first six months, when your teeth are still settling into their new alignment.
At Colchester Orthodontics Centre, we offer two types of retainers: removable and fixed. Our experts will help you determine which option is best for you.
Removable retainers are clear, custom-made trays designed to hold your teeth in their new position after orthodontic treatment. They’re easy to remove and should be worn each night to prevent your teeth from moving.
To keep your retainer in top condition, rinse it with cool water after use, brush it gently with a soft toothbrush (no toothpaste) and store it safely in its case when not in use. With consistent wear, your removable retainer will help maintain your beautiful new smile for years to come.
Fixed retainers are thin metal wires that are discreetly bonded to the back of your upper and/or lower front teeth. They provide continuous support, making them a reliable and unobtrusive solution to maintaining your straight smile.
It is important to brush carefully around the retainer and use floss threaders or interdental brushes to keep the area clean and free from plaque. Fixed retainers are a reliable option for patients who want lasting results without having to remember to put in a removable appliance.
Retainers4Life is a convenient retainer replacement program we’ve partnered with to give our patients a better, more flexible orthodontic experience. Using your most recent digital scan, Retainers4Life can create a brand-new retainer and deliver it directly to your door.

That’s what we are here for! Your orthodontist will recommend the best type of retainer for you based on your treatment, your teeth and your lifestyle.
Most people find that a fixed retainer does not noticeably affect their speech. You may find your speech changes slightly as you get used to the feeling of your new retainer in your mouth. However, this will be temporary and you will be able to speak normally within a few days.
You should not eat while wearing a removable retainer, as it could be damaged or stained. Always take it out for eating and drinking anything other than plain water. If you have a fixed retainer, you can eat as normal, just avoid very hard or sticky foods that could dislodge the wire.
Retainers are a long-term commitment. You should wear your retainer for as long as you wish your teeth to stay straight. If you stop using your retainer, you risk undoing all of your orthodontic treatment progress.
Your orthodontist will advise you if you can reduce the amount of time that you need to wear your retainer.
