Are you interested in private orthodontic treatment but unsure about the costs? In the latest installment of our blog, our Lead Treatment Coordinator Kayleigh takes you through some of the charges to anticipate, exactly what is included in your treatment fee, and how payments can be made manageable with our finance plans.

Here at Colchester Orthodontic Centre, we understand that private orthodontic treatment is a considerable investment of not only your time, but also your funds. This is why we are always completely transparent as to the costs you can expect and what your treatment fees cover.

Typical treatment fees:

One of the first questions we get asked by patients interested in starting private orthodontic treatment, is what it’s likely to cost. Whilst it’s impossible for us to provide a quote without conducting a clinical assessment, a typical fee for upper and lower braces is between £4,000-£6,000 depending upon the severity of your orthodontic needs and the treatment type chosen. The exact cost will be confirmed at your initial consultation.

Initial consultation fees:

If you are interested in private orthodontic treatment, the first cost to anticipate is for the initial consultation. This is a one-hour appointment with one of our Orthodontic Specialists, who will conduct a full examination of your teeth and take a 3D scan and orthodontic x-ray. They will discuss with you your concerns and aims for treatment, as well as your treatment preferences. With this information, they will compile a bespoke treatment plan, which includes a quote for how much the procedure will cost. The cost for this appointment is £195, with £50 payable at the time of booking.

Help to spread the cost:

If you are interested in going ahead with treatment, we offer a range of finance options which will be discussed with you at your initial consultation.* Our most popular, is our 12-month 0% APR option.** However, if you are looking to spread the cost over a longer time period, we also offer 24- and 36-month plans at an interest rate of 9.9% APR.** To be eligible for these plans, we ask for a deposit of a minimum of £500, but you can choose to put down up to 50% of the treatment’s value if you are looking to bring down your monthly repayments.

So what does this work out as?

Based on a typical treatment fee of £5,050 for upper and lower fixed braces, with a £500 deposit, you could expect to make the following monthly repayments:

* Available on a range of orthodontic treatment options.
**Subject to approval. Terms and conditions apply.

All appointments, including for emergencies: For Gold patients, appointments are available at the below times:

Monday and Wednesday8:30am-5:30pm
Tuesday and Thursday8:30am-7pm
Friday8:30am-1pm
SaturdayBy arrangement

Typical orthodontic emergencies include a wire or bracket coming loose and in these instances, patients just need to call the practice and we will arrange an appointment for you as soon as possible – at no additional fee.

Dental Monitoring (DM): is a means of gaining a record of your treatment progress from the comfort of your own home and is included in the treatment fee of all private patients. This helps reduce the number of visits you need to make to the practice and can speed up your overall treatment progress.  You will be asked to take once weekly scans of your teeth on a mobile phone and a ‘scan box’ which are then uploaded to our practice management system through an application on your phone. Artificial intelligence software is used to monitor your treatment progress, and this will be assessed by your Orthodontic Specialist and our dedicated DM analyst remotely. Dental Monitoring helps to avoid unnecessary trips to the practice – and most importantly, is complementary!

Retainers: All private treatment plans include fitted upper and lower bonded retainers, as well as a set of upper and lower removable retainers at the point of your braces being removed. If you lose or break your removable retainers in the first year after you have finished treatment, we will replace them free of charge!

Treatment taking longer than anticipated: Your treatment plan will provide an estimate as to how long treatment will take to achieve the result discussed at your appointment. However, if your treatment takes longer than the time estimated, there are no additional charges for appointments.

Affordable private treatment options for under-18s:

Here at Colchester Orthodontic Centre, we appreciate the frustration caused by lengthy NHS waiting lists. For this reason, we offer affordable private treatment options on fixed braces for patients under 18 years of age with our Silver Plans. Our Silver patients receive exactly the same treatment as those on our Gold plans, but have access to appointments between 8:30am and 4pm Monday to Thursday and 8:30am-1pm on Friday only.

The typical cost of upper and lower fixed braces at £4,020.00 for a Silver patient would work out as follows with one of our finance plans:

Length of planInterest rateMonthly repayment based on cost of £4,020.00 and £500 deposit
12-month plan0% APR£293.34
24-month plan9.9% APR£161.58
36-month plan9.9% APR£112.71

Are there any additional costs I should be aware of?

A question we get asked a lot when presenting patients with their treatment plans is, are there any additional costs I should know about? All our treatment plans outline exactly what is and isn’t included in the treatment’s price, but the below explains some of the most common areas for concern:

Not covered as part of treatment fee – For both Gold and Silver patients:

  • The initial consultation fee: This is not redeemable against the cost of treatment.
  • Any clinical procedure required as part of your treatment not carried out here at Colchester Orthodontic Centre: This could include – an appointment with a hygienist ahead of your brace being fitted to ensure optimal oral hygiene, extraction of teeth, or oral surgery. Where a patient will incur an additional fee is always clearly noted on all our treatment plans and highlighted by our Treatment Coordinators as part of the initial consultation. If you have any questions about what is included, just ask!
  • Repairs or replacement of appliances: If our clinicians deem breakages to be due to poor maintenance or neglect, a fee will apply.
  • Dental Monitoring: A charge of £50 will be made if your scan box is mislaid or broken and needs to be replaced.
  • The cost of subsequent review appointments after the 1-year supervision of retention period, or any appliances/replacement appliances required after this period: Review appointments will be charged at normal practice review rates after this period.
  • The cost of removing bonded retainers: If later down the line, you decide you would like your bonded retainers removed or replaced, this will incur an additional fee.
